Monday 9 May 2016 Excel Jazzmen had the room jumping with their mix of Old Orleans Blues and jaunty upbeat tunes reminiscent of a 1920s jazz party.Favourites were Treasure Island which Humphrey Littleton used to play sometimes, Tuxedo Rag by Papa Thurston and The Whining Boy Blues by Jelly Roll Morton, beautiful and soulful. The band was joined by some new members this evening on Trombone and on the impressive looking Sousaphone. This instrument is part of the Tuba family, which normally points the sound of the instrument upwards, whereas the Sousaphone points it forwards towards the audience.
We heard about Jean Saunders, one of the regulars who told us about her 70th birthday sky dive in aid of Spelthorne Dementia Support (part of Purple Angels). She jumped with Netheravon Paracute Association if you feel like trying it yourself or just take a look at Jean’s adventure up on YouTube here:
Jean wanted to thank everyone very much for the generous donations made last night and here is a link if you would like to make a donation online:
John Habes is off to Clarkesville Mississippi at the weekend and will update us on his musical adventures next month.
Next gathering is on Monday 13 June when we are joined by One More Time. Doors open at 7.30, music starts at 8.30pm, £6 and everyone is very welcome.
