Monday 13 November 2017 An entertaining evening of music and laughter last night at the club with West London Rhythm Kings. Favourites included Black and Blue (Fats Waller 1929 and Louis Armstrong 1955) with Iain Mcauley on vocals; Girl of my Dreams (Gene Austin 1928, Dizzy Gillespie 1955, Erroll Garner 1959, Charlie Mingus 1959), and 2:19 Blues (Louis Armstrong 1940). Chas McDevitt who is a regular guest of the band is recovering from knee surgery and sent his best wishes to everyone at the club. We hope he makes a speedy recovery and joins us again next time. Monday 15 August 2017 A smartly redecorated Hive bar provided the setting for Excel Jazzmen‘s return to the club with a lively session including St Phillips Street Breakdown, a George Lewis composition played by Ken Colyer in 1953. Other favourites included The Dipper Mouth Blues, King Oliver’s Creole Jazz band in 1923, and also a hit for Louis Armstrong in 1943, and I’ll Never Say Never Again, a Nat King Cole tune. Monday 8 May 2017 Bob and his band provided us with a wonderfully eclectic evening of music with jaunty, upbeat Ragtime tunes, some blues, Bix Beiderbecke numbers, solos and instrumental features. Favourites were Some Day Sweetheart with Bob on vocals and drummer Graham on the spoons, an original piece by bass sax player John Bayne called Sweet Melancholy, All of me, sung by guest Marilyn, and Putting on the Ritz with Hugh on keyboard and vocals.
Next month West London Rhythm Kings join us on Monday 12 June, doors 7.30pm, £6, music starts 8.30-11pm
Monday 10 April 2017 Another wonderful evening of traditional 1920s/30s jazz inspired tunes from Frog Island Jazz Band. Favourites included Snake Rag, a New Orleans Wanderers number Perdido Street Blues, a King Oliver arrangement of Riverside Blues requested by Fluff, Buddy’s Habit and ending with the wonderfully uplifting Froggie More Rag. We hope to see them back at the club again soon.
